Spanish Language Certificate (9 hours)


This Language Certificate program is administered by the Center for Language Studies (3086 JFSB), http://languagecertificate.byu.edu.

Any matriculated (degree-seeking) BYU student who meets the proficiency and course requirements may earn the Spanish Language Certificate. The proficiency requirement is met through the nationally recognized ACTFL Oral and Writing Proficiency Exams. Qualifying students will be awarded a certificate on one of three levels based on the following:

  1. Advanced Certificate: An ACTFL "Advanced" rating on at least one of the two proficiency exams and 9 hours of coursework with a minimum of a B- grade in each of the three courses.
  2. Mastery Certificate: An ACTFL "Advanced High" rating on at least one of the two proficiency exams and 9 hours of coursework with a minimum of a B- grade in each of the three courses.
  3. Professional Certificate: An ACTFL "Superior" rating on at least one of the two proficiency exams and 9 hours of coursework with a minimum of a B- grade in each of the three courses.

Note: Students who have completed all of the coursework required for a language major or a language minor will also have satisfied the coursework requirement for the language certificate.

      WHEN TAUGHT:Fall; Winter; Spring; Summer
      PREREQUISITE: Placement by test.
      DESCRIPTION: Intensive study and practice with Spanish grammar, vocabulary, and writings incorporating cultural and literary readings.
      NOTE: First class for returned Spanish-speaking missionaries. Fullfills the University Core Languages of Learning requirement. Required for Spanish major and minor.

Students who successfully complete a certificate will receive an official document verifying their level of achievement. The certificate will be listed on the university transcript.
